Collaboration at the Polar Environmental Centre is by 2010 concentrated to 9 institutions - seven research institutions and two state agencies - six of them with close connection to the Ministry of the Environment.
The research institutions receive a substantial part of their base funding through the ministry, while the agencies perform executive duties within its ambit.
The bodies of the Polar Environmental Centre are:
The Norwegian Polar Institute, Akvaplan-niva, the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU), the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA), the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU), the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA), the Norwegian Mapping Authority's Tromsø office and the National Coastal Administration.
In addition, Unilab Analyse AS, Arctic Council and Arktika AS are located in the building by 2005, with some 250 people working for these organisations in Tromsø. Common services at the centre are provided by a management company, Polarmiljøsenteret AS.

The Norwegian Polar Institute (NP) is Norway’s main institute for research and topographic mapping in the Norwegian polar regions. The institute also advises the Norwegian authorities on matters concerning polar environmental management.

Akvaplan-niva provides expertise on northern seas and freshwater areas as a consultant on environmental issues and through contract research. Participation in the Polar Environmental Centre and the centre programmes means that the company is strongly involved in research on eco-toxicology and environmental monitoring.

Through its research NILU increases the understanding of processes and effects of climate change, of the composition of the atmosphere, of air quality and of hazardous substances.
Based on its research, NILU markets integrated services and products within the analytical, monitoring and consulting sectors. NILU is concerned with increasing public awareness about climate change and environmental pollution.

niku.no/index.asp?languagecode=9">The Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU) is an accredited, autonomous body of expertise dedicated to the preservation of cultural heritage and its vitality as a resource.
We provide professional services and knowledge to, among others, heritage management authorities, planners, developers, and owners of valuable cultural property.

Norges geologiske undersøkelse, NGU, is the national institution for knowledge on bedrock, mineral resources, surficial deposits and groundwater. NGU shall actively contribute to ensuring that geoscientific knowledge is utilised for the effective and sustainable management of the nation's natural resources and environment. NGU's expertise can also be used in development aid projects. As a research-based agency, NGU also advises other ministries concerning geoscientific matters.

The Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA) is the competent national authority in the area of radiation protection and nuclear safety in Norway. The NRPA was created in 1993 through the consolidation of the former Nuclear Energy Safety Authority wiht the National institute of Radiation Hygiene.

Norwegian Mapping Authority participates in R&D in the area of cadastre, mapping technology and geodesy and cooperates with Norwegian industry and other government agencies in areas such as export-oriented measures.NMA was founded in 1773 and is a public agency under the Ministry of the Environment.
